They've always been very productive, good egg layers. I have a founding hen who is 7 years old now and still lays. Most of my birds now can trace back to her.

Indeed she seems to be a good asset to the breed now :)

Hope to get some from your lines in the future when America's laws in exportation becomes laxed :)

But for now you have my prayers and hope for that female and your ever improving lines :)

I am mainly breeding for Phoenix in bantams only, (Hyde Line BB Reds, Goldens & Silvers), although the best Golden male I got from Cy is really big for a bantam and his saddle drags the ground already as a cockerel. He is the main Longtailed male I am breeding from. In contrast to some Longtails I have heard about, this bird is very vigorous and super fertile and is more like a pet than a livestock animal. He has a super nice disposition. He is my buddy.

For the most part I am trying to select against the Onagadori trait of the 'flattening tail' which would imply that I am breeding more toward Phoenix and less toward Proto-Onagadori. By 'flattened tail' (I am not referring to low tail) but that the tail is more opened when viewed from rear and a little more expanded horizontally than on most breeds. I suppose I will use some birds with these type tails for matings geared more for Proto-Onagadori.

I prefer the slate legs which is also a Phoenix trait as the American Breed Standard requires them, however I am breeding from both slate and green legs.

To sum it up I am sort of breeding for both Phoenix and Proto Onagadori, but primary focus is more toward Phoenix than Proto-Onagadori. The birds I got from Cy had been pecked out when I got them back in the spring so it is going to take some time before they will show their potential in photos. He is a very nice man and the birds were as described and he gave me a discount because they were not in very good feather condition. (I initially posted some photos here but removed them since I realized they should have been posted in the 'Bird Photos Forum'. I'll post some more photos in a photobucket album in the future and share.) Enjoying the site.

Welcome to the forum, Doug! You have some nice birds there. :) Looks as though your roo has grown out nice from being picked at Cy's.

I agree that the more horizontally open tail doesn't suit Phoenix. Just doesn't look right with their over all appearance. I do like it on more Onagadori-like birds though. Phoenix should be fanned out more vertically.

I've never had a problem with fertility in my line either, just cold hardiness. Which is to be expected up here. Like you say, they can become pets very quickly. Much different from many other breeds.

Keep up the good work!
Bye for now,

David
