David, i believe Marc might have meant prohibition of Tomebako in either Italy or Switserland (or maybe even both). It's not forbidden in our country..and Europe has a lot of different countries i bet over 75% of them wouldn't even think of legislation on tomebako type cages/boxes. As long as you have shelter, food and water for the animals it's fine allready.

Maybe that was what he meant. I was thinking he was speaking of all European countries as a whole, but apparently not. I wondered how each country would ever come to agree.

He's looking good! His saddle feathers are so full and dragging so nicely already. I think he's going to be quite the bird as he matures. Thanks for the pics. David

...today I noticed that my rooster is getting new feathers in his sattle. The new feathers are lighter then the other ones. It looks like he will get a problem to move normally if there will grow so many new feathers!!!

He'll probably grow so many new feathers that you will be surprised how he can move at all. I've seen photos of Onagadori tails, the true tail; the flesh bit, that grows so many feathers from it that it becomes lumpy and distorted. They seem to almost grow feathers from on top of feathers. The saddle feathers probably do almost the same thing.

...my rooster is getting new sickles. I noticed two new feathers in his tail. I got to wash his tail cause it was very dirty after he had a bath in the new sand I put into the cage. But after 5 minutes that sand was mixed with water from the melting snow. The rooster really looked like a "pig"... But now he is clean again, and nothing is broken...

They can really make a mess in a hurry. It's a good thing that you were keeping a close eye on him. It sounds like you're taking good care of him.
If you can make a kind of sill around his pen and pile up the coarse sand in the pen high enough, the melting snow shouldn't be as much as a problem.
Snow can be quite a mess. In the older, 100+ yr old part of my barn, it has looser fitting siding and the snow sometimes blows in.

Tomebako are easy to make if you have a few basic tools of your own or a friend with a wood shop. I make mine 6 ft tall x 3 ft wide x 9 inches deep. The Japanese breeders make theirs a bit smaller at 70 inches tall x 32 inches wide x 8 inches deep. I make mine just a little bigger for a couple of reasons. The extra height puts the birds at an easier level to work with and the extra width and depth helps to keep feathers from fraying. There are some photos of tomebako on this site. David
