http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/AR/archive/j ... ic0104.htmProbiotics are live, nonpathogenic bacteria that contribute to the health and balance of the intestinal tract. They are given orally to poultry to help the birds fight illness and disease. Prebiotics are nondigestible foods or nutrients that probiotics need to stimulate metabolism. They feed the beneficial bacteria and modify the composition of intestinal microflora so probiotics can predominate. *click on the link to read the article in full..but just try to focus on what the substances do and not what the article is circling through..lol! Thanks!*

A hen came down with some mucus drainage a couple days ago. Nothing from the nares, just orally in the choanal slit and in the throat. She was constantly sneezing and coughing. So I got out the mortar and pestle, ground up six cranberries, added 2.5cc water, and 2.5cc apple cider vinegar. It made a total of 15cc of the mix, which I then slowly syringed into her mouth.
Within ten minutes the sneezing and coughing had stopped. By that evening, less than nine hours later, all symptoms had ceased. The next morning she looked and acted fine, but I gave her another dose anyway.

So David, what do you think caused her to start draining mucus in the first place? And what did the cranberry concoction have to do with fixing her problem?

The points on my old heater were acting up a while back and it would stick on and off. As soon as I discovered the issue, I got a new heater. I have no idea if that stressed her, allowing some germ to take hold or not. That's the only thing I can think of.
Acv balances the body's ph level. Oddly, even though it's acidic, it has the opposite affect inside the body and makes it slightly alkaline. Colds and viruses do best in an acidic environment. Raw acv with mother is anti-fungal and anti-viral. It also has trace elements, vitamins, etc. It's difficult to find raw acv. The best I could do was the stuff from the grocery store. At least that still works to lower the body's ph even if it's not as strong in the other benefits as is the raw acv.
Cranberries contain antioxidants in high levels, vitamin C, vit. K, manganese, and various minerals.
In short, it strengthens the immune system to work on its own - unlike an antibiotic that more or less wipes out the immune system for a time. Don't get me wrong, sometimes antibiotics are necessary. They just usually aren't my first choice of treatment and I rarely treat anything at all unless it's something very important that I really need. This hen will be 5 yrs old in June and has never even had a sniffle before, or even cocci as a chick for that matter. So I can't really complain. Probably just a fluke something or other this time.

That sounds like a really good home remedy. I might try that instead of the Gallimycin sometime.
